Begin your journey in the misty jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you'll trek through dense vegetation in search of endangered mountain gorillas—a powerful and intimate encounter with one of our closest relatives. Standing just meters away from a gorilla family in their natural habitat is a deeply moving and humbling experience.
Then travel to Tanzania for the Marangu Route, which offers a classic Kilimanjaro experience with the convenience of hut accommodations and impressive views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks throughout the trek, providing a constant reminder of the challenge ahead. The ultimate highlight is, of course, the summit attempt, culminating in reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, where breathtaking sunrise views from this vantage point offer the ultimate reward.
Day to day itinerary details
Day 1
Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Upon arrival in Kigali, your Buutu Safaris driver-guide will meet you and begin the scenic 5-hour drive across the border into Uganda. We’ll drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. Expect to arrive in the late evening, when you’ll check in at your lodge nestled on the forest edge.
Day 2
Gorilla Trekking Experience & Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi
After an early breakfast, we head to the park headquarters for a detailed briefing at 8:00 AM. From there, accompanied by experienced rangers, we trek into the dense forest in search of our assigned gorilla family. The trek can take 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas, but the reward is unforgettable.
Once the gorillas are found, you’ll spend up to 1 hour observing them in their natural habitat—watching them feed, play, groom, or simply relax. This rare encounter offers a profound connection with our closest wild relatives, who share 98% of our DNA.
After the trek, enjoy a picnic lunch in the forest, then return to the lodge to unwind.

Day 4
Flight Transfer & Arrival in Kilimanjaro
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by a Buutu Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. Your guide will provide a comprehensive briefing on your upcoming trek and conduct an equipment check to ensure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Any missing gear can be rented on this day.
Day 5
Marangu Gate (1,860m / 6,102ft) to Mandara Hut (2,700m / 8,858ft)
After breakfast, we will head to the Marangu Gate. Once the necessary paperwork is completed, your trek will commence. After a well-earned rest, your guide can lead you to Maundi Crater, where you can enjoy wonderful views stretching into the Kenyan interior.
Hiking
Day 6
Mandara Hut (2,700m / 8,858ft) to Horombo Hut (3,700m / 12,139ft)
The day begins with an early breakfast. Shortly after departing Mandara Hut, you will reach the timberline and then enter the heath and moorland zone. Approximately 4–6 hours later, Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3,700m. Here, you will be afforded exquisite views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo, and the wide plain of the Maasai steppe.
Hiking
Day 7
Horombo Hut (3,700m / 12,139ft) to Kibo Hut (4,700m / 15,420ft)
Today’s stage is long and challenging. The well-built trail passes the "Last Waterpoint," followed by the expansive "saddle," a nearly vegetation-less plateau that joins the main summit of Kibo with Mawenzi. Today’s destination is Kibo Hut, typically reached in about 5–6 hours. Here, we will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the summit night will be short.
Hiking
Day 8
Kibo Hut (4,700m / 15,420ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,336ft) & Descent to Horombo Hut (3,720m / 12,202ft)
The group will depart at night from Kibo Hut (4,700m / 15,420ft) and begin the final trek to Kilimanjaro's summit: Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,336ft). The trek will be moderate from a technical standpoint, but the extreme altitude presents a significant challenge, making even regular physical activity feel strenuous. For the entire length of the summit trek, each pair of climbers will be accompanied by their own guide, who will be monitoring their stamina and mental resolve. After your successful ascent to Uhuru Peak, you may descend to the nearest glacier if desired. You will then return to Kibo Hut for a two-hour rest before continuing your descent to Horombo Hut (3,720m / 12,202ft). Essential Note: Please remember that a significant percentage of accidents occur during the descent. Pay close attention to your footing, as there is a high risk of damaging your toenails.
Hiking
Day 9
Horombo Hut (3,720m / 12,202ft) to Marangu Gate (1,970m / 6,462ft)
After a warm breakfast, we will commence our descent to Kilimanjaro National Park's exit: Marangu Gate. Upon completing the descent, the entire group will gather for congratulations, and you will have the opportunity to share your opinions on the trip in the guestbook. Finally, you will be presented with your commemorative certificates before being transferred back to the hotel.

Day 10
Departure from Kilimanjaro
The day is left free for you to rest and relax after a long, challenging week of trekking. You may choose to extend your trip with Zanzibar beach experiences or a wildlife safari in nearby National Parks like Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara National Park. Alternatively, if your schedule does not allow for a safari extension, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home.
