Top of the Falls

Standing at the top of Murchison Falls is one of Uganda's most exhilarating experiences, where the mighty River Nile, the longest river in the world, is violently forced through a gorge just seven metres wide before exploding into the gorge below. The power is astonishing, a thunderous roar of white water sending spray and rainbows into the air, and you can feel the ground tremble beneath your feet. Many visitors reach this point via the "top of the falls" hike, a roughly 45-minute to one-hour climb up the escarpment from the river below, emerging at the dramatic viewpoint known as the Devil's Cauldron where the Nile funnels through the gap. The trail is steep and can be hot, but the reward is a close-up, visceral encounter with one of Africa's most powerful natural spectacles. It pairs perfectly with a boat cruise to the base of the falls, letting you experience this natural wonder from both below and above.
