Equator Crossing

Crossing the Equator is a fun and memorable highlight of any Uganda safari, and a wonderful photo opportunity to mark the moment you stand with one foot in each hemisphere. Uganda straddles the Equator, and the most popular crossing point lies at Kayabwe on the Kampala–Masaka road, about 72 kilometres from the capital, where large painted circles and signposts mark the exact line of latitude zero. Here you can take part in the classic water experiment, watching as water is shown to drain clockwise on one side of the line, anticlockwise on the other, and straight down at the centre, a quirky demonstration of the Coriolis effect that never fails to delight. Beyond the photos, the spot is a lively stop with craft shops, cafés and curio stalls selling local artwork, jewellery and souvenirs, making it an ideal place to stretch your legs, pick up a memento and enjoy a coffee. Easily combined with journeys to the southwestern parks, an Equator crossing is a light-hearted, uniquely Ugandan moment on the road to adventure.
